Well they are viewed as both. Weird or odd just means that the major population does not suffer from the disability or illness. But I guess is the eye that sees them, that categorizes them. To my eyes, they are just plain special kids that need a helping hand.
Kids with special needs are obviously not "odd or weird". Unfortunately the general public may not be informed regarding various types of disabilities / and their characteristics, therefore they may view as "odd or weird" a condition or conditions which they have no knowledge about.
Because they don't follow the same patterns as other children do and what the majority of what other people consider to be normal. You have to take into consideration what exactly makes them different and care for them just the same, regardles of how different they may be.
Children with special needs are not weird nor odd. People need more literature on how to deal with children with special needs, as well as understanding their feelings and placing oneself in their shoes. If it was your child would you still treat them as an outcast? Would they be odd? Would they be weird?
I feel they are neither nor.I think they are just like any other kid.If god was to give me a kid like that I would treat them just like any of my other kids I hate that people try to put them into different categories. People remember they are humans and have feeling also.
They are viewed as weird because people don't understand their needs. Some say that all the child need is a good spanking but that is not the case all the time. Some children can't help themselves and need special attention or medication.
Children with disabilities learn differently. It is not that these children should adapt to education but that education should adapt to meet the needs of the student. Instruction is meant to reach all children, regardless of disability, through various mediums. I firmly believe that all children can learn. It is we, the educators (and parents) who need to design the means for equal access to a fair education.
They are seen as different because they are set apart from the "cookie cutter normal" I appeares to me, if you do not fit into this "cookie cutter normal" you are different. I say "let your freak flag fly", or rather it was Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young who said it. You have to have the confidence to wear it and ues it to your advantage.
Kids with special needs are sometimes treated as outcast becasue some people are just plain rude and narrow minded. They need our love and understanding. At the end of the day, they can't be blamed for the way they are. It's not their fault. They have a right to be treated fairly. We who are of reason should respect and help those who are unable to do so for themselfs.
my mother is a foster parent for 20 years plus and special needs child are not weird or odd they are people with feelings and emotions just like everyone else
I believe, base in my own experience, most people categorize special kids as weirdos. That is part of not understanding their world, their needs, and they emotional responses to situations. I have been working with special kids for the pass 3 years, and I have discovered an whole different idea of what special kids are. I have been interacting with this specific autistic child, on Saturdays only. When he sees me, he start jumping, and when he approaches to me, his eyes goes loose, and his facial expression looks literally like a maniac. That is his way to express happiness, and until I realized that I was scared to dead. It is about understanding and getting to know then.
I feel its due to the common misconception that a child with special needs is always handicap. People fail to realize that special education children are not always handicap some simply just learn differently.
Children that are in a special education setting are viewed as being different or outcasted because they are seen as different or abnormal. I was in special education (middle school) and i think that at times, I was told i was "dumb" because I was in special edu. I think many children think special education is for people that are far behind and have mental issues.
Special needs kids are viewed that way because the stupidity of our society. If they are not like the person then they are viewed as weird. My brother in law and one of the players on the baseball team I coach are autistic, People say their slow and dumb when in all reality they are very smart. The boy on my team is better than most of the team. They are smarter than most people and never judge us so why judge them.
